My sons knee pain

Tag: Knee & Hip Problems

My son who is 10 has pain in his knee above, below and outside of his knee cap and behind his knee. He only gets this pain when playing soccer, it does not hurt while playing baseball. It will also hurt if we have walked all day say at an amusement park. It is mostly in one leg but the other sometimes hurts too. I have just chalked this up to growing pains, he grew 2 inches from december to march. Last night after soccer tryouts he asked if I would take him to the dr since it hurt so bad. I have not noticed him limping and it is not swollen. I plan on taking him in to the doctors just wanted to know if there are any thoughts to what this could be.

I don't have any idea but I would urge you to take him to a doctor ASAP and insist on an xray. He's at a crucial point in his skeletal development and you want to catch anything troubling now.

He could have possibly injured his knee in the past playing a sport or just being a kid. I just had knee surgery on the 4th this month (my second one, first one was back in 1999). Often what happens is when you injure the knee inflammed tissues can cause pain in those areas you describe, in and around the knee cap as well as behind the knee. Seeing an orthopedic is a good idea as he will be better able to diagnos a problem if there is one, it can be more then just growing pains. It doesn't have to hurt all the time or cause him to limp in order for there to be something wrong. I sometimes was able to walk normally for grocery shopping or just walking with my hubby, but the next day I was always in tons of pain. The best thing to do for him is ice his knee for 30 minutes when he has pain and maybe give him some children's tylenol (which ever you feel safe to give him). The knee doesn't have to appear swallon to be internally swallon. Also if it is warm to the touch it's a good indicator that there is some swelling in the knee.
Send me wishes of good luck to your little man! I hope all works out well for him!!

Slight tear in his acl. He is in a brace for a couple weeks along with aleve. If he is not any better we will do an mri. Wish us luck

Wow, tear in the ACL at age 10? That will be something to watch. He may do fine for a while but boys being boys he's going to be very lucky if he doesn't eventually tear it all the way. I had mine fixed when I was in my early 30's.
