How long does Effexor Withdrawl last?

I have been lurking on this board for a few weeks now and just thought I would go ahead and post my questions. My husband has been on Effexor for a couple of years. He was put on it to help him cope with chronic back pain. In March of this year he had an L4-L5 fusion which has resolved most of his back pain issues so we thought it would be a good idea to come off the Effexor. WHEW...what were we thinking? He started dropping from 150mg then 112.5mg for 2 weeks, then 75mg for 2 weeks. He really had no problems dropping to this does, but he has been unable to drop anymore. We have tried the 37.5mg but he became so sick that we have had to go back to the 75mg. The bad news is that the symptoms will not go away now. He still feels very anxious and nauseous all the time. He vomits everyday and has lot 15 lbs in the past month. He desperately wants to come off this medication because he just does not feel that he needs it now. But how do we do this? How long with these withdrawal symtpoms last? He has been sick since before Thansgiving. He does not want to go back to the 150mg dose because he thinks that is just going to make it worse and take him longer to get off of this horrible medication.

Does anyone have any suggestion or encouragement regarding coming off Effexor? How long did it take for you to start feeling normal again? We are in living in Effexor H@ll.

I had bad nausea and it lasted about 2 weeks (but considering I only took the med for 1-2 months, just hold on, don't let him go into it again, it's better to get rid of that powerful drug!!

I don't mean to scare you, but it took me nearly two years to get rid of all the withdrawal effects from Effexor. The nervousness, nausea, shakiness, out of body feelings lasted several months afterwards, but the vivid nightmares took about 20 months to finally subside. I wish you and him good luck.

i was on effexor xr 75 mgs for a yr and i got off mine by going on zoloft 50 mgs it didnt take too long after that i took zoloft prob 4-6 mos then stopped and i then had no trouble but to me i hated effexor xr for one they put me on it for panic and depression and it never helped me one bit the dr upped my dose to 150 and made me worse so went back down to 75 but while on them i had bad side effects such as i wanted to kill myself so i got off them i begged the dr many times to please get me off and a yr later when i finally went in and told him id rather die then live this way he sent me to a psychiatrist who put me on zoloft i now take no anti d's and never will again none of them ever helped me anyway alls i take for panic is xanax which helps calm me down my niece though has been on 300 mgs of effexor xr for 6 yrs and i think she stays on them because of the horrible w/d's i told a psychiatris it was w/d's and she said no its not its from skipping your dose well it was w/d's and they were horrible im glad im off all anti d's now xanax may be addicted but as long as they help me im going to take for life they saved my life when i got my first bad panic attack and without them id freakout and be calling 911 all the time .

Thank you for your replies. He is still very sick, however the nausea seems to be subsiding some. He still has alot of anxiety, which in turn causes nausea. We have decided to hold strong and not go back on a higher dose. We are going to try to wait it out, but with the holidays coming, family in town, and two small children (2 & 5) it is hard. He is taking alot of supplements to counteract the symptoms. I am not sure if they are helping or not, but we will continue them anyway. Our plan is to stay at 75mg until after the holidays and then start decreasing slowly. I am even considering taking apart the capsules and trying to count beads. I have read about that online. He sees the dr. on Monday and maybe she will have some better suggestions.
