we always used anbesol (spelling?)

it's a clear cream that you can put right at the gums, to numb the pain.

keep taking the ibuprofin. and good luck.

vicodin

not addicting if you use it properly-for pain for a few days is fine. get some prescribed over the phone from your family ddr/dds.

I used to be a dental assistant, and have also experienced the pain myself. I've also tried the stronger pain meds, and it doesn't help at all. Vicodin will not do anything to help. The reason being is that you need an anti-inflammatory to help relieve some of the pressure which causes the pain, and Vicodin is NOT an anti-inflammatory. Aspirin would be a better bet, or ibuprofen. It won't necessarily get rid of the pain, but it may ease the swelling at the root/nerve until you have the procedure done. The only way to get rid of the pain is to get rid of the problem, so make sure you see the dentist regularly to avoid it reaching that point.

As soon as you feel the pain, go to the dentist. If it goes away, don't assume the problem went away. It'll only come back again and when it does, it'll be worse. Something that starts out as a small cavity will only get bigger, and if not taken care of will eventually become a root canal, can become infected, etc and that only means more pain, more dental work and less money in your pocket!!!! (root canals are SO expensive, especially if you need a crown)

Sorry I can't offer any other advice to help alleviate the pain, but at that point there really isn't much you can do but stick w/an anti-inflammatory.
