Health questions:A pulpotomy isnt a root canal? I had it done on in upper left tooth & have to go back again. What happens next

It was really painful, a " hot tooth" - what can I expect when I go back for 2nd part? I am a very fearful patient!

A pulpotomy is the first step of a root canal usually done in order to get the patient out of pain. The DDS removed the nerves from your tooth and closed it back up. Perhaps you had a lot of infection or were in a lot of pain or maybe they just didn't have time to finish that day. Your next appointment should not be painful as the dentist has removed most or all of the nerves of that tooth. Now they just have to clean, sterilize, and permanently fill the canals. Good Luck!!

A puplotomy is like a root canal but done on a "baby tooth". The difference has to to with the anatomy difference in an adult tooth and a baby tooth. When you go back the dentist will check to see that the tooth has calmed down enough for a restoration (either a filling or a crown). In a baby tooth a crown is not quite the same either-usually a premade stainless steel "cap" that is placed over the tooth to protect it from breaking. If the tooth is now free from pain and infection then a restoration will be placed you will be numb for that just like the pulpotomy. All these things are done to help keep you out of pain and keep your baby tooth until it is suppose to come out normally. You will "wiggle" the tooth with a filling or a "cap" on it out just like any other baby tooth when it comes time for you to lose it.
